"There are three criteria I look for: 1) Does the painting hold up at a distance? In other words, is the value and shape constructions strong? 2) Is there a skillful application in the handling of the medium? Are the colors rich and fresh and are there confident brush statements and clean washes? 3) Has the artist allowed himself or herself the freedom of personal expression? This is frequently overlooked, but I feel an integral, and probably the most important element, of noteworthy fine art."
